Roasted Turkey Wings

Roasted Turkey Wings

Tired of the hassle that cooking a whole turkey brings? This Thanksgiving turkey recipe allows you to still have a turkey but doesn’t take up half the oven! I’ve used this recipe for about five years now and I don’t think I’ll go back to cooking a whole turkey. I’m always looking for a way to make Thanksgiving day easier and this recipe does just that.

Tips & Tricks

  • When making this recipe, you should allow your turkey wings to marinate in the fridge overnight. I’ve tried different methods as far as timing, but overnight was definitely the best.

  • You can use chopped fresh sage instead of ground sage if you’d like

Ingredients

6 turkey wings (my pack came with 6, so that's why I used this amount)

1 large onion (large-medium dice)

1 heaping teaspoon of minced garlic

1 teaspoon of olive oil

1 ½ teaspoons of salt

¼ teaspoon of pepper

1 teaspoon of onion powder

½  teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon ground sage

½ stick melted unsalted butter

1 teaspoon of flour or cornstarch, mix with ¼ cup of water and set aside in a cup

Procedure

  1. Combine all of your dry spices and set aside.

  2. Drizzle your olive oil onto the turkey wings and mix well until they are thoroughly covered.

  3.  You will then add your seasoning and mix well. Add your chopped onions and garlic as well and mix around.

  4. Cover with plastic wrap and allow your turkey wings to marinate in the fridge overnight.

  5. When you are ready to cook, you will first arrange your onions so that they are primarily on the bottom and your turkey wings are on top (with the thick-skinned side facing up). At this point, I also like to add an extra light but thorough sprinkle of salt and pepper over the turkey wings.

Here’s what my wings look like once I’ve arranged them and prepped them to be buttered and broiled.

6. You will then drizzle your melted butter over your turkey wings and place them in the oven to broil on low until the skin becomes golden/crispy to your liking. Be sure to watch them so that they do not burn. You will only need to brown the tops of your turkey wings, no need to brown each side.

7. Once they are crispy, you will add your cornstarch slurry and pour (not directly onto the turkey wings but around them) into the pan. This cornstarch slurry will allow the sauce in the bottom of your pan to thicken.

8. You will then turn off your broiler and preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 375 for one hour.

9. After one hour you will then take off the foil and turn up the heat to 390 degrees and cook for an additional 40 minutes.

10. After the time has passed you can broil your wings again on low for a minute or two if you like a crispier top but be sure to watch closely since it can burn easily.
